A meniscus is a C-shaped rubbery cartilage that acts as a shock absorber between the shin bone and the thigh bone. A meniscal tear is a a tear in the meniscus due to a forceful motion like twisting, or rotation of the knee while running or walking. It leads to pain, swelling, and stiffness in the knee joint. Surgery and treatment of meniscal tears depend upon the type, size, and extent of the tear. The meniscal tear involving the outer third of the knee usually heals on its own due to the rich blood supply in that area. But in cases of medial or inner third of the meniscal tear, it lacks proper blood supply, making the healing process worse, and hence in cases of inner third meniscal tear, surgery with removal of torn meniscus is required which is called arthroscopy. In the long run, patients who undergo arthroscopy experience pain and inflammation of the knee joint called osteoarthritis, which may require total knee replacement.
